The Garage Shield Review – Prevent 6-second burglary

During my research, I came across an excellent little helper. It is called: The Garage Shield
In this post, I want to give you my objective review, and you’ll be able to decide if this would be a great addition to your garage or not.

Now that we have the legal part behind us let’s get into it.

What is it?

The Garage Shield is, in simple terms, a plastic shield that you mount on your j-bar. This should prevent burglars from reaching your emergency exit lever in your garage. If you need a refresher about the method, please have a quick read here:

As you know, with just a coat hanger, a burglar can enter your garage and your house. Once The Garge Shield has been mounted in front of the lever, it will delay or even prevent a coat hanger from reaching the lever.

Who is it for?

The Garage Shield is a quick and inexpensive product to solve the issue with the 6-second break-in. Would you be able to build something like this on your own? Probably yes. But if you count the time, material, and efforts you would have to put into it; you might be cheaper by buying the product. For me, it was a no brainer. I ordered it with the vendor from the comfort of my home, and a couple of days later, I mounted it to the j-bar. Installation took me less than 1(!) minute.

The shield makes sense for renters, owners or even real estate agents. Its installed and quickly and if you have to, you are able to remove it without any issues – just pop both plastic screws attached to the shield and you are good to go.

Pros and Cons

While working with this product and installing it to my own garage, I was able to get a couple of insights. There are a lot of things I like: It is easy to install, so easy that I even post a video for it. The shield does not block the emergency lever or it’s function which is a huge bonus in case this is considered to be your additional emergency exit at your house. 

While The Garage Shield is made out of plastic and some might question the effectiveness, but keep in mind that plastic is very lightweight and it won’t add any additional stress to the garage hardware or will rattle. The only thing I would point out is the screw attachment which appears to be a bit flimsy. You probably could overtighten it a bit if you are not careful but the main function is just to hold the shield in place.

While I suggest looking for instructions on the vendor’s website, I just wanted to show you how easy it is to attach it.

Conclusion

I’m really surprised how easy it was to fix a very common issue with garage break-ins. Once I’ve put it in my garage, I immediately felt a bit relieved. It is a good feeling knowing you did something to probably prevent something bad. Is the garage now entirely secure from any break-in attempts? No, but it got for sure a bit more complicated, and I solved this with very low investment – both in terms of time and money.
